Companies incentivised to employ Goans: Parrikar

Porvorim: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar stated on the floor of the House on Tuesday that companies employing Goan youth are incentivised as the government can’t compel industries to employ only Goans.

Replying to a query tabled by Santa Cruz MLA Antonio Fernandes during question hour, Parrikar said it is not possible to find Goan candidates to work in all kinds of industries operating in the state.

“Some 30-40 years ago, all employees at trawlers were Goans. Today, that is not the case. While trawlers are owned by Goans, labourers come from Odisha and Jharkhand,” said the CM, who also holds the industries portfolio. “As much as 99% labourers working aboard Goan trawlers are non-Goans,” he added.

“There are industries for which local manpower is not available. We can’t shut those down,” Parrikar said in response to Fernandes’ question wherein the latter sought to know the number of Goans employed in various industries operational in the state.
