Nasscom keen on making Goa IT hub: GCCI

July 10, 2012
PANJIM: India’s premier software industry association, Nasscom, has now decided to help develop Goa as an information technology (IT) and IT enabled services hub.
The representatives of National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) met the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) president Manguirish Pai Raikar in Mumbai during a recent business event and discussed the initiative.
“Nasscom has evinced keen interest in Goa as the next destination for IT and ITES,” Raikar informed, terming the meeting with the representatives as ‘fruitful.’
Goa has now been considered as a three-tier city, where the development of IT as an industry has much scope. Nasscom’s initiative will be a big boost for the state, which has rolled out the red carpet for green industries to set up shop in Goa, Raikar said.
The association will soon be holding a special meeting with its members, in which the proposal of developing Goa as the next destination for investment, would be discussed. GCCI will act as a nodal agency between investors and the state government.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who was present for the Mumbai event has already assured all possible help to expedite investment in the State. The chief minister has also assured the investment promotion board to look after the needs of the people investing in the state.
Raikar estimated that from IT and ITES itself, 3000 to 5000 jobs would be created in Goa. “Goan youth have an advantage of good English speaking skills, which are required for ITES/BPO companies,” he said adding that companies such as IBM have expressed their interest to set up shop in the state.
“Goa does not have ready infrastructure for the IT industry and it will take at least six to eight months before such infrastructure is created,” Raikar stated.
GCCI in its knowledge paper, released recently had stated that IT and ITES industry are very well suited for Goa, since this industry is non-polluting.
Parrikar, while presenting the state budget had assured to take up all IT related projects on fast-track and on mission mode. He has also promised requisite infrastructure support such as land at reasonable rates, licences for construction purposes, water supply, workforce, etc.
