Management education in future will be centred on successful case teaching and case writing with industry partnership, according to KM Padmanabhan, Secretary, Case Research Society of India.
This is in order too if students graduate to being industry-ready to deal with real life business situations, he said while speaking here at a workshop on case teaching and case writing.
But success will lie in developing required skills in teachers and professionals to develop Indian industry cases based on conceptual and contextual methodologies for classroom teaching.
The Society teamed up with the CET School of Management, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, to host the two-day workshop.
AS Suresh Babu, CEO, Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd, and President of the Trivandrum Management Association, inaugurated the workshop.
Among others who spoke were N Ravichandran from IIM-Ahmedabad; R Srinivasan from IIM-Bengaluru; G Chandramohan, Director, and Suresh Subramoniam, CET School of Management; and S Shabu, principal, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram.
Indian case studies

It is well known that management education at the post- graduate level can be made extremely effective by case method of instruction, the speakers recalled. This pedagogy was pioneered by Harvard Business School based on their experience in teaching law and medicine.
Over a period of time, several management institutions in India have systematically adopted case method of instruction. Several institutions are making a transformation towards this instruction methodology.
Training faculty

But faculty members need to be reoriented or trained in case method of teaching. Management institutes should not only practice case method of instruction in their curriculum but also write management cases.
To operationalise this vision, there is a need to train, reorient, reenergise and reactivate management faculty from various business schools on case method of teaching and case writing.
The workshop facilitators used cases and supporting material provided by the Harvard Business School and IIM-Bengaluru to emphasise need for documenting Indian success stories as cases by management teachers and industry professionals.
The Society (www.caseresearch.in) has trained more than 700 management teachers and professionals in various parts of the country during the last seven years.
