South Eastern Railway (SER) has witnessed an increase in coal movement and earnings growth.
It said in a press release that during April this year, its freight loading was 10.63 million tonnes, almost same as the corresponding month of the previous year.
Though there has been 5.34 per cent improvement in loading of coal as also raw material to steel plants, fertiliser and petroleum products, there has been a drop in loading of cement, pig iron and finished steel. Container movement also witnessed a decline due to sluggish demand.
However, freight earnings improved 9.07 per cent to ₹871.8 crore in April this year from ₹799.3 crore during April 2014. Improvement in earnings has been mainly because of coal movement.
SER expects to see an increase in movement from the iron ore mines of Orissa and Jharkhand from this month. It also project a rise in coal traffic from Haldia Port as also movement of fly ash and slag.
